SSC CGL Exam Pattern 2026 – Complete Tier-wise Structure & Marking Scheme

    Last updated: 4 March 2026

The SSC CGL 2026 exam pattern defines the structure, marking scheme, and time allocation for each stage of the Combined Graduate Level Examination. Understanding the exam pattern is essential for effective preparation strategy, time management during the exam, and maximising your score. The Staff Selection Commission revised the CGL exam pattern in 2022, and the current two-tier structure continues for 2026.

The examination consists of two computer-based tiers. Tier 1 is the screening stage — its marks are not counted in the final merit but candidates must clear cut-offs to qualify for Tier 2. Tier 2 is the main examination whose normalised score determines the final merit list and post allocation. This means your Tier 2 performance directly decides which post you receive.

In Tier 1, candidates face 100 objective-type multiple-choice questions (MCQs) carrying 200 marks. The four sections are General Intelligence & Reasoning (25 questions, 50 marks), General Awareness (25 questions, 50 marks), Quantitative Aptitude (25 questions, 50 marks), and English Comprehension (25 questions, 50 marks). The total time allowed is 60 minutes. For PwD candidates with certain disabilities, extra time of 20 minutes is provided. There is a negative marking of 0.50 marks for every incorrect answer, making accuracy crucial.

The Tier 2 Paper 1 is compulsory for all posts and is divided into three sessions/modules. Session I (Module I) covers Mathematical Abilities (30 questions, 90 marks) and Reasoning & General Intelligence (30 questions, 90 marks) with 60 minutes duration. Session II (Module II) covers English Language & Comprehension (45 questions, 135 marks) and General Awareness (25 questions, 75 marks) with 60 minutes duration. Session III (Module III) covers Computer Knowledge Test (20 questions, 60 marks) with 15 minutes duration. The total Tier 2 Paper 1 carries 450 marks over 2 hours 15 minutes.

Tier 2 Paper 2 is only for candidates who apply for the post of Junior Statistical Officer (JSO). It consists of 100 questions on Statistics carrying 200 marks with a duration of 120 minutes. Negative marking in Tier 2 is 1.0 mark per wrong answer for Paper 1 and 0.50 marks per wrong answer for Paper 2.

Key strategic points for candidates: (1) In Tier 1, attempt accuracy is more important than completion since negative marking is steep relative to low marks per question; (2) In Tier 2, Module II (English + GA) carries the highest combined marks (210) — strong performance here often determines success; (3) The Computer Knowledge section in Module III is relatively easy and should be treated as a guaranteed score area; (4) For Tier 2, there is no sectional cut-off — only an overall cut-off applies, so candidates should maximise their strong sections.

The normalisation formula used by SSC adjusts for difficulty variations across different shifts. Candidates appearing in a relatively harder shift receive slightly adjusted scores. The normalised Tier 2 score is the sole basis for the final merit list. Understanding this helps candidates focus their entire preparation intensity on Tier 2 once they clear the Tier 1 cut-off.
